Regarding this design studio we placed ourselves within a group of like-minded individuals to collectively improve our own design ideation and share knowledge.
After putting some thought around how to best incorporate everybody's interests and create a framework within which all of us could operate we decided to go in the direction of Bio, Tech & Ancestry.
The three topics worked well in combination.
- The bio part would revolve around anything concerning nature itself, with particular focus on plants coming from Juaco and Chris, as well my interest in other species characteristics which oftentimes get underrated by humans and a general perception of humans being the all around better species or whatever it is that all of us think.
- Tech provided a medium to enhance or provide support to bring natural environments to communicate with humans, improve cognitive or physical abilities of human species though the eyes of biomimicry and body reconfiguration.
- Whilst ancestry is a platform to reconnect with our past knowledge and practices which were situated in a much closer and in some way truer sense with nature.
Some of my personal interests from this ideation:
- Vision enhancement devices inspired by 8-eyed spiders such as spider goggles with fractal visions.
- Sensing of the unfamiliar by using VR medium (e.g. how bird's flying would feel)
- Martial Arts inspired by Praying Mantis represented to provoke people into seeing the unusual through a performance and dance.
- Other communication forms such as whale's language (clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls) immersed in water environments.
Moreover, I got quite inspired by Didac's ideas of using 3d generative design modelling adapted to natural form and designed from algorithmic perspective instead of set parameters and manual design usually adapted by designers. It's something I'm looking forward to learn and experiment with in the second term.
